5 Questions To Ask Yourself When Considering Online Graphic Arts Colleges

Interested in a career in graphic arts? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), most graphic design jobs require a bachelor's degree. So if you're already busy with family commitments, a full-time job, or a long commute that makes attending traditional classes impractical, then look through the following questions to figure out whether a graphic arts school online could be right for you.

Five Questions to Ask Yourself About Online Graphic Arts Schools

1. Can you work well independently? Those who are interested in online graphic arts schools should be self-motivated and disciplined. The freedom and flexibility of online graphic arts schools means that there will be no one checking to make sure you completed your homework, listened to the lecture, or are even progressing toward the end of your coursework. If you don't think you'll handle the freedom well, online graphic art schools may not be for you.

2. Do you thrive on community? If you are the type of person who enjoys face-to-face interactions, you might do better in a traditional graphic arts classroom. If you enjoy working with others but are still interested in online graphic arts courses, then look for an online school that offers plenty of opportunities for discussion and feedback, which could include online discussion boards, peer reviews, and plenty of correspondence with the instructor.

3. Do you know where to find scholarships? According to the New York Times, most online schools charge tuition similar to that of traditional schools. So even if you're saving money on commuting gas, room and board, or by working at the same time that you're studying, finding scholarships can save you even more money. Look at the College Board Web site and Fastweb.com; these are two free Web sites that can help you get started.

4. Is your online graphic arts school accredited? Buyer beware: there are online schools out there that offer diplomas at a price, but aren't actually accredited. If you want to make sure your degree actually means something, check the accreditation status of your online graphic arts school at the U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

5. Does your school's graphic arts program mesh with your career goals? If you're just looking for basic training in graphic design, you may not need to be as picky about what graphic arts school you attend. If, however, you are interested specifically in graphic design with an emphasis in advertising, magazine layout, or art direction, make sure the online graphic arts school you enroll in offers courses, if not an emphasis, in your secondary field.

If you have done the research, know your career goals, and know your learning style, then you are probably ready to attend an online school for graphic arts. Keep working hard and don't let yourself get sidetracked, and you should be well on your way to a career in graphic arts.

Cell Phone Arts

Presume you’re sauntering down the lane and you see that bizarre signboard which kindles your thirst to shoot. But then you realize that your sturdy SLR isn’t with you (be practical, who carries that heavy piece 24?7).

Well, this is exactly where your cell phone comes in handy. Nowadays, the pocket sized all-so solid mobile phone cameras have driven the point-and-shoot ones to near extinction (well, almost). We take a closer look on some tips that can help you get the best out of your cell phone camera.

CHOOSING THE SUBJECT

different present day phones offer megapixel counts above 5, but that doesn’t mean they are apt for every shooting scenario. For instance, if you are employing your phone to shoot a rock concert, more often than not you’d merely get dark blurry images. The fact is, camera phones are ideal for shooting still objects in well-lit scenarios, preferably in broad daylight.

Even if your phone offers Xenon or LED flash, night photography shouldn’t be its cup of tea.

So what is the remedy? Well, peek into your camera’s settings. You will find a number of scene modes (even with the most basic VGA ones) such as ‘night landscape’, ‘portrait’, ‘sports’, ‘fireworks’, etc. These presets automatically choose the ideal shooting options for the given scenario. Experiment with each and you are sure to see your photographs improve drastically. In the newer breed of Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phones (and in some of the Samsung phones too, though features on Samsung are country-specific most of the time), you will come across an option called Slow Sync Flash. Don’t hesitate to use it. Basically, Slow Sync tells the camera to shoot with a slightly longer exposure time thereby giving the Flash an enhanced duration of exposure.

Bluntly put, it helps to lessen the dark.

KEEP IT Stable

If you are getting blurry images with your phone, don’t fret on account of you are not alone. Most of the phones’ cameras have slow shutter speeds with no feature to vary the exposure settings. The advantageous thing one can do is to hold the phone as safe as possible, preferably with both hands while shooting. It is not confusing but does require some practice.

KNOW THE ‘CLICK’

Another passport to getting sharp photos is to know the camera’s shutter release. In no problem terms, how long does it take for the camera to pull off the task after you press the shoot button? If there is a lag, you will need to account for that. And if the shutter release is on a touch screen (such as on the Apple iPhone), the shutter presumably gets tripped after you lift your finger, not when you press down. Either way, you will need to hold the camera steady while the picture is in reality being exposed. This does not mean that you need to get a tripod for your phone. Just keep your hands still (or at least as still as possible).

OPTIMIZING THE CAMERA SETTINGS

Most camera phones today provide a few settings that you can use to optimize your exposures. All the standard rules and terms from digital cameras are pertinent. If there is an ISO setting, take it off Auto. When you are outdoors in daylight, you should set the ISO to its lowest grade to minimize the digital noise in your picture (which can be pretty grainy with a camera phone). In lower light settings, bump the ISO up as high as it will go (which notably should be at least 400 in a decent phone).

Likewise, the phone may provide you some control over the JPEG image quality. Always go for the lowest compression/biggest quality option available. After all, camera phone pictures are already compact enough to begin with – do not compound the quandary with needless photo-damaging compression.

If you are the owner of handsets with cracking optical zoom ratings (such as Sony Ericsson C903, Samsung Pixon or the newly released Nokia N8), use the zoom to the fullest. You will find zooming in at 3x or 4x on the object a better option as compared to yourself moving forward. However, be warned: this is fruitful with OPTICAL zoom only. If your phone is one of the 20x DIGITAL zoom types, bother not. Digital zoom won’t be helpful much and is at greatest used sparingly.

GET THE Bona fide TOOLS

Your photo editing software – whether it is Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Photo-Paint or even something like Google’s free Picasaweb – can help improve most of your camera phone photos. If you have an Android device or an iPhone, you are in great hands as tupbeathere are large applications and softwares available that put most of the image editors to shame. For iPhone users, the plethora of options from the Apple stable includes Free Photo Filters, SP Photo Fix Lite, Photobox and iRetouch Lite. If you are an Android user, well, the galaxy is filled with apps for you. Check out Picsay and FxCamera. Both of them, along with multitudinous other apps, are freely available from the www
FINAL WORD

When cameras where first assimilated into mobile phones, they were something of a gimmick, providing very low resolution and sad quality images. Today, cameras are an indispensable piece of the phone and the features just keep going higher. Even though your phone will stand nowhere in comparison to a mainstream camera, with some effort and implementation of the above said tips, you are sure to get great results. Happy shooting! respectable

Led Zepellin Changes Graphic Arts Direction

The economy is definitely affecting the licensed merchandise market. Everyone is reducing their offerings. Sound like more bad news? Not if you are a collector.

We got word from both Led Zeppelin and The Beatles that they are reducing their licensed apparel and gift merchandise offerings, so we're stocking up for the drought. We have several styles of Led Zeppelin and The Beatles t-shirts in stock that are or will be retired. That means once they are gone, they're gone. We also still have some of The Doors licensed apparel that was retired last Fall. So, if you're a Led Zeppelin, Beatles or Doors fan, now is the time to get that t-shirt you've been eyeballing.

Items are retired when merchandisers and license owners (band or legacy) want to change designs, reduce or eliminate current products offered in the marketplace. Reasons might be to cut costs, prepare for a new release or to comply with a legal battle with the license.

Most bands come out with new items once the issue is resolved, but this is the time to collect - before the items are so rare that the value is pushed out of your budget.

Retired items are good news for a collector. If you buy what you like when it is current and keep it in good condition, it will appreciate over time. When the item is retired, it starts appreciating faster as less and less items are available in the marketplace.

One example is the Elvis, Jimi Hendrix and Rolling Stones Lava Lamps. We've had them in stock and available for a few years now at retail and as low as on sale. They are retired and no longer available from the licensed manufacturer. They are now priced at 5, but the longer we keep them, the more valuable they become.

If you were waiting on buying one of the lava lamps, it's still a fair price, but I'm afraid you've missed out on the best price.

Happy Collecting to all!

Pet Photography And Graphic Arts

Just like other family members, pets are also an essential part of the family. Being loved by almost all members of the family, pets are often photographed by them. But co-operation from pets is very rare. You would require a lot of film and patience if you are thinking of clicking pictures of your pet. A great thing about photographing pets is the fact that any type of camera can be used in taking their pictures.

Most pet pictures are taken randomly with the least expensive camera and they turn out to be great. The pictures can be easily enlarged and displayed on your walls due to the new easy to use cameras. You can use 35mm camera for crisp and sharp images. You have to be very quick in clicking the picture as soon as the pet comes in focus.

Just like a magnet, a spool of thread would attract your cat. Maintain focus on the tread and then click a lot of pictures when the cat comes close to it. You can invite a dog into the focus area with the help of some noise and then take its pictures. Once the dog has responded to some noise, you can start clicking pictures. Even in this case, you should use pre-focusing.

Get your dog in a playful mood when shooting outdoors and capture amazing pictures of our dog. Your children and pets could give you some amazing natural pictures while playing with each other.

For wonderful pictures, use these tips. When you are clicking pictures of a pet with a child, get as low as possible. You need to bend your knees and get the camera to the child's level. Try to take a closer view of the pet but do not zoom or distract the pet, do it in a very discreet manner. The distinct expressions of pets can be captured only when taken from a close point.

If you want to shoot the birds in a cage, to make the bars disappear, you need to do a tight close up. While clicking the fish in an aquarium, the same technique has to be followed. Always make sure you get a lot of shots of your pets. A lot of patience is involved in taking good shots of your pets.

When your pet is ready for a picture, do not take a long time in setting up the camera, click as many pictures you can. Most professional photographers agree that there's a direct relationship between the number of pictures you take and the number of classic photographs that you will make. In order to get more classic photos, click more and more pictures. This practice is really useful when you're dealing with pets that are hard to click.

Apply Graphic Arts Principles When Designing Your Resume

Human beings are affected by aesthetics: nice looking anything grabs our attention. That is why one book warrants your picking it up while browsing, and another doesn't. Keeping basic principles in mind when creating your resume will ensure your resume warrants a good look while the next one gets passed over.

KISS Principle
The "keep is simple" idea applies to resume design. In one to three pages you will be listing an unbelievable amount of information. If you don't keep the design simple, you will lose your reader's attention. Stick to one font, one design element, one set of structural changes.

Font
Make it easy on yourself, and stick to one font. This eliminates a problem often seen in home-crafted resumes: inconsistent use of fonts. Use only fonts that are universally available. If you go fancy, you run the risk of your resume becoming seriously reformatted at the recipient's end, sometimes scrolling to an unintended multiple of pages.

Size of font will depend on the font itself. For example, Arial is fine in size 10, whereas Garamond in 10 is almost illegible. Use your judgment.

Maintain the same font size and style for all similarly purposed entries. For example, if you are adding a one-line description of your past employers, and you italicize the first, continue this pattern.

Refrain from overdoing capitalized or italicized fonts as both can be difficult to read in saturation.

Coordinate Your Documents' Appearances
Borrow an idea from professionals: coordinate your resume, cover letter, and reference page so that all maintain the same header, font, margins, and design element. An easy way to stand out.

The Four Principles: Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, Contrast
Closeness implies a relationship.

Proximity refers to related items being grouped together. This creates one visual unit and organizes the information for the eye of the reader.

Scattered information may reflect an unorganized mind. Alignment creates a clean look by purposefully positioning each entry on the page eliminating an arbitrary, scattered look. Stick to a left aligned, centered, or right aligned layout.

Too many knickknacks in a house turn off home-buyers, and too many graphic elements will distract a resume reader. Repetition strengthens a cohesive look, and enhances organization. Stick to one element, one font, one structure and repeat throughout.

Sameness equals dullness, and you don't wish to come across as dull and uninspired on your resume. Contrast adds interest, and eliminates confusion. If elements are not the same in function, make them quite different. For example, contrast heading font size not by just one size, but by a few.

Readability
All the above ideas lead to one vital thing: they make your resume ultra-easy to read and scan. Recruiters are busy people who will not labour over an unorganized, messy looking resume. If your resume is composed in an italicized, flowing font that is almost impossible to read, and absolutely impossible to scan through quickly, you have knocked yourself out of the running.

Become adept at applying these basic principles of document design, and you will instantly impress the reader by your ability to organize detailed information in a clean, yet visually appealing, manner.
